Largs Lifeboat paged at 12:55 on 29/07/09
Largs Lifeboat requested to launch to a 32 foot yacht with 3 persons on board aground on Southannan Sands. While on route to the yacht Largs lifeboat established comms with the rib "Spitfire" that was trying to pull the yacht free but at this time had no luck doing this. Once alongside the yacht Largs lifeboat rigged a tow to the yachts mainsail Halyard which when the lifeboat started to go ahead on pulled the yacht over onto its side and free from the obstuction, the rib Spitfire also helped by pulling the yacht stern first and after a couple of seconds the yacht was floating freely. Rib Spitfire was then released on its passage and after checking the yacht for any water ingress it was deemed safe for the yacht to continue on its passage under its own power back to Largs yacht haven.
The Lifeboat then returned to station and was made ready for the next service call. |

Largs Lifeboat paged at 02:50 on 22/07/09
Largs lifeboat requested after the Fishing vessel "Lady Isle" transmitted a Mayday stating that a haydraulic pipe had burst in the engine room and a fire had started.
As the lifeboat was preparing to launch the RFA Bayleaf contacted Clyde Coastguard stating that they were making best speed to the last known position of the fishing vessel to give any support possible.
Once the lifeboat was alongside it was found that the crew of the fishing vessel had discharged a fire extinguisher into the engine room and had closed the doors hoping that this would contain the fire. Due to the amount of combustable fuel and gas onboard the fishing vessel it was deemed safer to remove the 2 crew onto the lifeboat whilst they waited for a fast response craft from the RFA Bayleaf to arrive with thermal imaging equipment to see if the fire was extinguished.
Once the crew of the Bayleaf had checked out the fishing boat it was found to be safe to reboard it.
The 2 crew members then contacted the owner of the fishing boat who stated that if it was possible they should steam back to Greenock where the boat is usually moored, however once they started checking the vessel over more closely it was found that the engine was overheating so was decided that it would be best to shut the vessel down and return to largs with the lifeboat where the owner would meet them and take them to get his other boat from a port further down the coast and steam back to the Lady Isle so they can tow it back to Greenock.
The Lifeboat crewa nd Clyde Coastguard agreed that this was the best course of action and after nearly 4 hours the lifeboat was back on station getting refueled and made ready for its next service.

Largs Lifeboat Paged at 21:38 on 09/07/09
Largs Lifeboat launched after a yacht had called Clyde Coastguard stating that they had broken down and were unsure of their actual position.
The yacht had stated that they thought they were approx 5 miles off Ardrossan. The CG via radio asked if there were any vessels in that area that could help, one vessel replied and started searching for the yacht, however after almost an hour of searching the yacht could not be found, the CG then asked for the lifeboat to be launched to assist in the search.
Once on scene the lifeboat started to search for the yacht and after a time expanded the search area which was beneficial as they eventually found the yacht closer to the shores of Arran.
The yacht was then towed back to Clyde Marina and the lifeboat returned to station. |
