Largs lifeboat paged at 12:45 on 25/06/09
Largs lifeboat was requested to launch to a 40foot cabin cruiser who had managed to motor over a discarded fishing net. The initial position of the casualty vessel was approximately 2,5 miles SouthWest of Garroch Head, whilst on route the Lifeboat diverted to a small sailing dinghy with 2 persons on board who had capsized quite violently some 200 yards away from the lifeboat, once it was assertained the crew of the dinghy did not need any assistance the lifeboat proceeded to the given position of the cabin cruiser.
As the lifeboat was approaching Garroch Head one of the crew managed to contact the vessel via mobile phone and received a clearer position, this position transpired to be a further mile away from the initial reported position. Once onscene and after assessing the casualty vessel it was decided that Largs Lifeboat would tow the vessel back to Largs Yacht Haven, after some 2 hours of towing the vessel was tied up safely alongside the fuel berth it was at this time the crew of the lifeboat saw the size of the fishing net.
The lifeboat cleared up the tow lines etc and then returned to station approx 3 hours after the initial page. |

Largs Lifeboat Self Launched at 18:00 on 09/06/09
Largs lifeboat sef launched tonight to a person who was in difficulty after falling from their jet ski. Luckily for this person there were some crew already at the Lifeboat house as it was a training night. Within seconds of launching the lifeboat came alongside the casualty and it was noted that they had no bouyancy aid or appropriate clothing for being out on a jet ski and due to this they were starting to suffer from hypothermia, due to the coldness of the water the casualty was also extremely tired and this was noticable as when they were asked to let go of the jet ski so they could be pulled from the water their head went below the surface and the casualty ingested alot of sea water, after hearing this the LOM asked the Coastguard to send an ambulance to assess the casualties condition. After being warmed slowly in the shower at the boathouse and given warm dry clothing the ambulance crew deemed it uneccessary for the casualty to go to hospital for a check up.
One thing that has been learned from this cal out is that under no circumstances should you partake in water activities without the correct clothing or safety equipement this person was lucky this time as it happened close to shore but it could have turned out worse. |

Largs Lifeboat paged at 16:17 on 02/06/09
Largs lifeboat was requested to launch by Clyde Coastguard after they had received a call from one of the Cumbrae Coastguard Rescue Team, who stated that he had seen 2 adults in what looked like inflateable Kayaks being blown offshore from Millport Bay. In the short time it had taken the member of the local CRT to go and get binoculars the kayakers had dissapeared. Once onscene the lifeboat conducted a an inshore search as close as they could get into the coastline, this proved fruitless and therefore the lifeboat extended its search area and also asked various vessels in the area if they had picked up the kayakers, whilst doing this the member of Cumbrae CRT came aupon the adults onshore safe and well and stated that the lifeboat could be stood down. The lifeboat then returned to station and was made ready for its next service. |

Largs Lifeboat paged at 17:35 on 30th may 09
Largs lifeboat requested to launch after a report of a person in the water within Largs Yacht Haven, on arrival it was found that the casualty had been recovered from the water by another sailor and was being attended too. It appears that the casualty had been leaning over the back of his yacht trying to put a rope around a cleat and had slipped over the side, he then hit the pontoon before entering the water and due to this had a suspected broken arm. Once onscene the lifeboat crew administered oxygen until the arrival of a local ambulance.
With the casualty on route to the hospital the lifeboat returned to station and was made ready for the next service. |
