Largs Lifeboat paged at 15:05 on 16th May 09
Largs lifeboat was requested to launch to a vessel thought to be on fire in Rothesay Bay, however due to a small delay in the launching proceedure Largs requested that Tighnabruaich lifeboat also be launched to this vessel as it was midway between the unofficial areas covered by both lifeboats.
Once launched Largs Lifeboat made best speed to the last known position of the casualty vessel and after a few minutes located it, as Largs arrived onscene first Tighnabruaich Lifeboat was stood down by the Coastguard, After a crewmember assessed the casualty vessel it was found that a faulty fan belt had been the cause of the smoke. Largs Lifeboat rigged up a tow and moored the vessel safely within the confines of Rothesay harbour. The lifeboat then returned to station and was made ready for its next service call. |

Largs Lifeboat launched at 15:55 on 15th May 2009 ( Self Launch )
Largs Lifeboat launched today after one of the lifeboat crew noticed that a vessel that had been moored off the lifeboat station was dragging its mooring. The wind at the time was gusting between a force 4 or 5 in an Easterly direction, which meant that the vessel being approximately 50 foot in length would become a danger to local shipping. The crewmember called the Lifeboat Operations Manager to inform him of what he was watching. The LOM went down to the boathouse to assess the situation and proceeded to call round the crew to see who was available to go out and aid in the recovery of the vessel. Once onscene a crewmember was placed on board to see if anyone was ill or injured, after it was found that nobody was onboard the crew member tried to start the boats engines, unfortunately only one engine would start so it was decided that motoring the boat would not be a good idea. It was also noted that the boats mooring rope and bouy were hanging off the bow of the vessel, after informing the coastguard of the situation the coastguard given the sea state and the wind direction onscene asked a Tug named Forth Hunter who was in the vicinity if they could be of assistance, they agreed and assisted in towing the vessel to Fairlie Quay where the vessel was made safe and reunited with its grateful owner.
After nearly 2 hours and the crew thinking it would bea simple boat recovery the lifeboat returned to station and was made ready for its next service call. |
